CoPilot users in North America who have devices linked to FleetPortal can now take advantage of smaller, more frequent map updates.

These updates include temporary highway closures, truck restrictions, and other critical information CoPilot needs to generate safe, legal, and efficient truck routes. The updates will automatically be downloaded by CoPilot over-the-air (Wi-Fi or cellular data) as they become available, as frequently as multiple times a month.

What is changing?

CoPilot map updates have traditionally been made available one to three times a quarter in North America as full sets of data for the U.S. and Canada. These data sets include new and reconstructed roads, updated truck restrictions, points of interest, and more.

Depending on the regions you select to download to devices, map sets can range in size from 50MB for a single state or province to 2.8GB for maps of all of North America.

The new service provides critical roadway updates between the quarterly updates. The advantages of these small, maintenance updates, include:

  • Lower data usage. We anticipate updates will consume roughly 200KB of wireless data, per device, per month.
  • Faster updates. Updates are released multiple times a month.
  • Crowd-sourced information. The updates include map edits submitted by drivers and fleet administrators via MapSure. (All edits are reviewed and approved by our map data team.)

Like all CoPilot map data, the updates are stored on the device. While these maintenance updates greatly enhance maps, full data set updates are still necessary to get new roads and all of the latest map data

Getting started

Trimble Maps needs to activate this service for your fleet to take advantage of it. (Please speak with your CoPilot sales rep or contact us for more information.)

Once activated, the data on your CoPilot devices will first need to be brought up to date with all of the critical roadway updates made since the data set released in Q1 of 2020. There are two ways to do this:

  • Update all of your devices right away to the most current data set in North America. Going forward, your devices will only receive newly released updates.
  • Allow CoPilot to "catch up" by gradually receiving the updates dating back to the last time a full data set update was completed on your devices. We can work with you on how quickly to deploy these updates. The chart below shows an estimate of how much data is required to bring each of your devices current. (So, for example, if your last full update was Q4 of 2020, you would need 1.2 MB.)

How does the service work?

The updates are delivered automatically to CoPilot if your devices are connected to FleetPortal. CoPilot checks for updates on startup and every six hours while active. (The frequency of updates can be set as often as every three hours using the sync interval setting in a Configuration Profile in FleetPortal.)

The driver does not need to do anything to apply the updates.

What types of map data updates are provided?

The types of data included in updates will increase over time. Currently, updates include:

DescriptionSizeFrequency of Releases
Temporary highway closures

Edits: Less than 10 a month

Estimated monthly data usage per device: 2.5KB

As needed
Truck restriction updates reported by customers and gathered by the Trimble Maps data team

Edits: Less than 10,000 a month

Estimated monthly data usage per device: 200KB

Additional storage required to support these updates for 2 years, with no full data updates: 50MB.

Multiple times a month

Frequently asked questions

How does the critical map updates service work?

CoPilot checks for new edits on start-up and every 6 hours, depending on the sync interval set in FleetPortal. Only new edits are downloaded and stored on the device as overrides to the existing map data. If there is an active trip, CoPilot will wait until the trip is ended before it applies the edits.

When a new, full map data set is installed on the device, the overrides are deleted. Most edits should be included in the new data. Only the edits that are still applicable to the newly installed version of map data are downloaded again.

Are any new CoPilot settings required to take advantage of the more frequent updates?

No new settings are necessary, either for partners who resell CoPilot, or for fleets that purchase CoPilot directly. Once you are connected to the service, the updates are automatic if you are running CoPilot 10.19 or higher on your devices and use FleetPortal.

Is there a minimum map data version required to receive these updates?

This feature works with any map data version in North America beginning with Q2 2016.

Does this change affect any other Trimble Maps products?

The same map edits sent to CoPilot are also automatically applied to our PC*MILER Web Services routing APIs.  Web APIs use the most current data by default.

What updates are available for regions outside of North America?

Outside of North America, the availability and frequency of map updates depends on your specific license agreement. Please contact your account manager.

How do I get a FleetPortal account?

FleetPortal is available for purchase at the time you buy your CoPilot licenses or it can be added at a later time. Contact your sales representative for more information.

Can my company contribute map updates?

Yes. Fleet admins can report issues via the MapSure web portal and drivers can report them within the CoPilot app, using the Map Feedback feature. The login for MapSure is the same login you use for FleetPortal. Customer-reported fixes for truck road restrictions will be included in these more regular map data updates.
